Pim B. : 'The Ancient Path' from Germany's Doomed already impressed me. This one-man band by Pierre Laube has now released their second album on Russia's Solitude Productions. On 'In My Own Abyss' Pierre continues in the style he started on 'The Ancient Path'. The great thing about this album is the heavy but clear sound. Where I already mentioned Bolt Thrower and Mournful Congregation in the review of the previous album I want to add that I hear the intensity of later Celtic Frost, Triptykon and a band like Evoken on this second album. Next to that the melodies of a band like Norway's Funeral lurk around the corner. Each and every time I think it's amazing a single person can put an album like this together. The final track is striking too. The songs entitled 'Ах ты, степь широкая' which translates into 'Oh You, Wide Steppe' is a rendition of a traditional Russian folk songs. After a couple minutes of silence there's a mystery track that sounds like a (modern) classical piece. I assume Pierre wrote this. As a whole a really strong doom/death album you simply cannot miss as a fan of the genre.
